Why Most Bettors Lose Money on Odds Alone

Different sportsbooks use different formats. A bettor who can’t quickly compare -110 to 1.91 to 10/11 leaves money on the table. The odds converter eliminates confusion – revealing which book actually offers better value.

Understanding the Four Odds Formats

Sportsbooks worldwide use different odds formats. The betting odds converter translates between all four instantly – letting you compare lines across any bookmaker regardless of their default display.

Decimal Odds

The simplest format. Decimal odds show your total return per unit staked, including your original bet. Odds of 2.50 mean $100 returns $250 total ($150 profit + $100 stake). Standard in Europe, Australia, and Canada.

American Odds

American odds use positive and negative numbers. Positive (+150) shows profit on $100 stake. Negative (-150) shows how much to stake for $100 profit. Standard in the United States.

Fractional Odds

Traditional UK format showing profit relative to stake. Odds of 3/1 (read "three to one") mean $3 profit for every $1 staked. Odds of 1/3 mean $1 profit for every $3 staked.

Hong Kong Odds

Hong Kong odds show only the profit portion, excluding your stake. HK odds of 1.00 mean you double your money (same as 2.00 decimal). Popular in Asian markets and betting exchanges. Simple to calculate profit: stake × HK odds = profit.

Odds Conversion Formulas

Converting to Decimal (Base Format)

FromFormulaExample
American (+)(American ÷ 100) + 1+150 → 2.50
American (-)(100 ÷ |American|) + 1-150 → 1.67
Fractional(Numerator ÷ Denominator) + 13/2 → 2.50
Hong KongHK + 11.50 → 2.50

Converting from Decimal

ToFormulaExample
American (+)(Decimal - 1) × 1002.50 → +150
American (-)-100 ÷ (Decimal - 1)1.67 → -149
Hong KongDecimal - 12.50 → 1.50

The odds calculator handles all conversions automatically. Enter any format and see instant results across all four systems.

Implied Probability Explained

Every odds format implies a win probability. Decimal 2.00 implies 50% chance (1 ÷ 2.00 = 0.50). This is what the bookmaker believes – or at least what they're willing to offer.

Odds TypeFormula for Implied Probability
Decimal1 ÷ Decimal × 100%
American (+)100 ÷ (American + 100) × 100%
American (-)|American| ÷ (|American| + 100) × 100%
Hong Kong1 ÷ (HK + 1) × 100%

Compare implied probability to your own assessment. If you think Team A has 55% chance but implied probability is 47.6%, you've found potential value. Use the EV Calculator to quantify the edge.

Common Odds Conversion Mistakes

Confusing American Positive and Negative

+150 and -150 are very different. +150 means $150 profit on $100 stake (2.50 decimal). -150 means you need $150 to win $100 (1.67 decimal). The sign matters enormously.

Forgetting Stake in Decimal

Decimal odds include your stake in the return. Decimal 3.00 doesn't mean 3x profit – it means 3x total return (2x profit). Hong Kong 2.00 is the equivalent profit multiplier.

Misreading Fractional Odds

1/4 is not the same as 4/1. 1/4 means $1 profit for $4 staked (1.25 decimal, heavy favorite). 4/1 means $4 profit for $1 staked (5.00 decimal, longshot).

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Hong Kong odds?

Hong Kong odds show net profit only, excluding your stake. HK 1.00 equals Decimal 2.00 equals American +100. Multiply stake by HK odds to get profit. Popular in Asian sportsbooks and betting exchanges.

Why do American odds use plus and minus?

Plus shows underdog (profit on $100 stake). Minus shows favorite (stake needed to win $100). The system centers on $100 as the benchmark unit.

Which odds format is best?

Decimal is most intuitive for calculating total return. Hong Kong is simplest for profit. American is standard in US markets. Learn all four – you'll encounter each when line shopping internationally.

How do I convert fractional to decimal quickly?

Divide the first number by the second, then add 1. For 5/2: (5÷2) + 1 = 3.50 decimal. For 1/4: (1÷4) + 1 = 1.25 decimal.

What's the relationship between odds and probability?

Lower odds = higher implied probability = more likely to win (according to the book). Decimal 1.50 implies 66.7% win chance. Decimal 4.00 implies 25% win chance. Use implied probability to compare your assessment against the market.
